Cleaning your smoke machine is relatively easy to do and could help to prolong its life, and you should aim to do so after every 30 hours of operation or before long periods when you won’t be using it. Here’s how to clean your machine: Start by completely emptying the tank of smoke fluid and rinsing it with cold water. Allow the tank time to dry. Remove the tube from the tank and add the cleaning solution. Heat your smoke machine and switch on the smoke function until the machine stops generating fog. Allow the cleaning agent to be vaporised (there shouldn’t be a visible output). Put the tube back into the fluid tank and the remainder of the cleaning agent back into its bottle. Fill the tank with fog fluid and operate the machine until the visible fog is ejected as normal. You should always use a compatible cleaning agent for your machine, such as ADJ Smoke Cleaning Fluid. As vinegar is odorous, take your machine outside to clean it. Empty any smoke fluid from the tank before cleaning. Make a cleaning solution from equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Add the mixture to the tank and place it into the fog machine. Once the mixture has all been used up, fill the tank again, this time with distilled water. Finally, allow the tank to air dry. Do smoke machines set off fire alarms? Although smoke machines can make an event or party look amazing or enhance your set, there is always a chance that they could set off the venue’s smoke alarms.   First and foremost, the risk of setting off a smoke alarm is significantly reduced if you use a haze machine instead of a smoke machine. Haze machines use fluid that omits vapour with smaller, lighter particles that usually go undetected by smoke alarms, particularly if the haze is used sparingly. The output of a smoke machine has larger particles, which are more likely to trigger smoke alarms, but as the fog is dense and heavy, it lies lower to the ground, so again, this can be controlled if the fog is used sparingly – rather than on a constant flow. How to prevent a smoke alarm from being triggered by your fog machine As all venues have different smoke alarm systems, there are some measures you can put in place to prevent smoke alarms from ruining your performance. Firstly, contact the venue to see which type of smoke alarms they have.   If a change in atmosphere activates the venue’s system, your machine will more likely trigger this. Start by doing a venue check-up and testing your equipment to see whether the system can handle your machine. If this isn’t possible, you could ask the venue to turn off some of the smoke alarms that could be impacted during your set. Most venues should welcome this, as the presence of a dedicated professional can help with insurance if anything should happen. Another option is to do the show without smoke if the effect is unnecessary. Finally, introducing smoke gradually is the best way to add it to your show. Power handling, put simply, is how much power your speakers can handle.   For example, a speaker with a normal impedance (or electrical resistance) of 8 ohms and continuous power of 350 watts will require an amplifier of 700 watts into an 8-ohm load. To achieve optimum performance from your PA setup, the total ohm load of your passive speakers should match your amplifier. What are the main types of power amplifiers? Power amplifiers are divided into three types depending on the output device connected to them. Audio power amplifiers  Audio power amplifiers increase the power of a weak audio signal and are used in the speaker-driving circuits of mobile phones, headphones and televisions.   The output of an audio power amplifier can range from a few milliwatts, in the case of headphone amplifiers, to the thousands of watts needed for home theatre systems. RF Power Amplifiers With wireless transmissions, modulated waves need to be sent through the air over long distances. When it comes to FM broadcasting, for example, the antennas require large input signals that are at thousands of kilowatts of power. DC power amplifiers In electronic control systems, DC power amplifiers amplify the power of pulse width modulated signals (PWM). DC power amplifiers take input signals from microcontroller systems and increase the signal’s power before feeding the amplified version to DC motors or actuators. The specific power amplifier needed usually depends on the application’s requirements, such as desired power level, frequency range and efficiency. Power Amplifier classifications As there are multiple ways of designing power amplifier circuits, how they operate and the characteristics of each circuit configuration differ.   Generally, these are divided into two categories: those designed to amplify analogue signals (Categories A, B, AB and C) and those designed to amplify digital PWM signals (categories D, E and F). The power amplifiers that are most commonly used are those in audio amplifier circuits and are the ones that you’re most likely to come across when investing in a power amplifier for your PA setup. Class A Amplifiers  Class A Amplifiers use a single transistor to amplify both the positive and negative halves of the analogue waveform, and the entire input waveform gets used in the amplification process. As the transistor, the electric component or active element used for amplifying, is in use all of the time, even when there is no input signal, this generates a lot of heat, meaning that Class A amplifiers aren’t as efficient as other power amplifier options. Class B Amplifiers  Class B power amplifiers solve the efficiency problems of having a single transistor in the amplification circuit. Because of this setup, each transistor amplifies 180 degrees of the signal, meaning the full 360 degrees is amplified more efficiently. Class AB Amplifiers  Due to the potential distortion that can be experienced at the crossover point of Class B amplifiers and the lack of efficiency of Class A amplifiers, class AB amplifiers were designed. Class AB amplifiers combine Class A and B features to achieve a compromise between signal linearity and efficiency. Class C Amplifiers  Unlike A, B and AB power amplifiers that mainly focus on the clarity and quality of the amplified signal, Class C amplifiers are much more efficient but sacrifice signal quality as a result.
