Full range active speakers: sometimes referred to as ‘tops’. These speakers produce the full frequency range of sound. However, you will often find that using a smaller active speaker - such as an 8” or 10” version - doesn’t produce the lower bass sounds as well as the larger 12” and 15” versions.
Active bass speakers: sometimes referred to as subwoofers. For lower bass sounds, these are your best option. Customers will often run an active bass speaker, and then add a speaker pole to that to mount one of the full range active speakers onto it. This creates a system that really gives a kick, as you get the best of the bass end of the frequency spectrum, while also giving clarity at the higher end for things like speech and vocals.
