Background Music Systems for Commercial and Public Spaces

A well-designed background music system provides clear, consistent sound throughout a venue without becoming distracting or overpowering. These systems are used for music, spoken announcements, paging and general public address in shops, restaurants, cafés, hotels, offices, schools, warehouses, leisure facilities and public spaces.

Our range includes complete systems and individual components, allowing you to create anything from a straightforward single-room setup to a larger multi-zone installation. You can choose from background music amplifiers, ceiling and wall-mounted speakers, column speakers, weather-resistant horn speakers and ready-matched background music system bundles.

Complete Background Music System Bundles

A complete bundle is often the easiest starting point when installing a new system. These packages combine a suitable amplifier with a specified number of compatible speakers, helping remove much of the uncertainty involved in matching amplifier power and speaker loading.

Bundles are available for a wide range of applications, including retail units, cafés, restaurants, offices, classrooms, gyms, warehouses and outdoor areas. The exact contents vary, so always check whether speaker cable, microphones and mounting accessories are included.

Background Music Amplifiers

The amplifier is the main control point for the system. It powers the speakers and provides connections for the required music and announcement sources.

Our range of background music amplifiers includes compact units for smaller installations and higher-powered mixer-amplifiers for larger commercial systems. Depending on the model, features can include:

  • Bluetooth audio playback
  • USB and SD media players
  • FM or DAB radio
  • Microphone and line inputs
  • Priority microphone inputs
  • Chime and paging functions
  • Separate output zones
  • Independent volume control for different areas
  • 100V line and low-impedance speaker outputs

If announcements are required, check that the amplifier has a suitable microphone input and any priority or muting functions needed. A priority input can automatically reduce the music volume while an announcement is being made.

Choosing the Right Installation Speakers

The best speaker type depends on the building, installation position, coverage requirements and whether the system will be used mainly for music, speech or both.

Ceiling Speakers

Ceiling speakers provide discreet and even coverage in rooms with suitable suspended or accessible ceilings. They are widely used in shops, restaurants, offices, classrooms, hotels and reception areas.

Using several speakers at a lower level usually creates more consistent coverage than relying on one or two louder speakers. Always check the required cut-out size, mounting depth and ceiling construction before installation.

Wall-Mounted Speakers

Wall-mounted speakers are a practical choice where ceiling installation is not possible or where the direction of the sound needs to be adjusted. They are suitable for hospitality venues, retail units, offices, gyms, workshops and covered outdoor areas.

Models are available for indoor and outdoor use, but the product’s weather or IP rating must be checked before installing it where it may be exposed to moisture.

Column Speakers

Column speakers use several drivers arranged vertically to provide controlled sound coverage and clear speech reproduction. They are commonly used in places of worship, halls, schools, transport facilities and other acoustically challenging spaces.

Their controlled dispersion can help direct sound towards the audience while reducing unnecessary output towards ceilings and other reflective surfaces.

Horn Speakers

Horn speakers are designed primarily for speech, paging and warning messages over larger distances or in noisy environments. They are frequently used in warehouses, factories, yards, car parks, sports grounds and outdoor public areas.

Some horn speakers can also reproduce music, but conventional installation speakers usually provide a more balanced sound where music quality is the main priority.

Understanding 100V Line Systems

Many commercial background music installations use 100V line technology. A 100V system allows multiple speakers to be connected over longer cable runs without the impedance calculations normally associated with conventional low-impedance speaker systems.

Each 100V speaker has one or more selectable power settings, known as transformer taps. To calculate the system load, add together the selected wattage of every connected speaker. This total must remain below the amplifier’s rated 100V output, with sensible spare capacity left for reliable operation and possible future expansion.

For example, ten speakers set to 6W create a total load of 60W. We would normally choose an amplifier with more than 60W of available 100V output rather than operating it continuously at its maximum rating.

Do not connect low-impedance speakers to a 100V output unless they are specifically designed or correctly configured for that connection. Always check the amplifier output type and speaker specification before installation.

Single-Zone and Multi-Zone Systems

A single-zone system sends the same audio to every connected speaker and is suitable when one source and one overall volume level are required.

Multi-zone systems provide greater control across different parts of a building. Depending on the equipment, separate areas may have independent volume controls, different music sources or individually selectable announcements. This is useful in hotels, restaurants, schools, offices and retail premises with several rooms or departments.

Think about how the venue will be used before selecting an amplifier. Adding zone control later may require additional equipment or changes to the cabling.

Choosing a Background Music System

Consider the following before selecting your equipment:

  • The size and layout of the building
  • The number of rooms or coverage areas
  • Whether separate audio zones are required
  • The main use of the system, such as music, paging or both
  • The type and number of speakers required
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Required weather or IP ratings
  • Amplifier output and total speaker load
  • Bluetooth, USB, radio or other playback requirements
  • Microphone and priority announcement requirements
  • Cable routes and approximate cable lengths
  • Wall, ceiling or surface-mounting requirements
  • The possibility of adding more speakers later

For larger or more complex installations, the system should be planned and fitted by a competent commercial audio installer. Fire-rated products or specialist cabling may be required in some buildings, depending on the installation and applicable regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What equipment is needed for a background music system?
A: A typical system requires an amplifier, compatible speakers, speaker cable and a music source. A microphone is also required if the system will be used for announcements. Complete bundles combine the main amplifier and speakers, but the included accessories should always be checked.

Q: What is a 100V line speaker system?
A: A 100V line system is designed for commercial installations using multiple speakers and longer cable runs. Each speaker is set to a chosen wattage, and the combined wattage of all connected speakers must remain below the amplifier’s rated 100V output.

Q: How many speakers can I connect to a 100V amplifier?
A: This depends on the amplifier’s rated output and the wattage setting selected on each speaker. Add together the tap setting of every connected speaker and make sure the total remains below the amplifier rating, leaving suitable spare capacity.

Q: Can a background music system also be used for announcements?
A: Yes. Choose an amplifier with a suitable microphone input. If announcements need to override the music automatically, select a model with microphone priority or voice-over functionality.

Q: Can different areas have separate volume levels?
A: Yes, when the system is designed with multiple zones or compatible local volume controls. The amplifier and wiring must support the level of independent control required.

Q: Which speakers are best for outdoor use?
A: Use speakers with a weather or IP rating suitable for their installation position. Weather-resistant wall speakers, sound projectors, column speakers and horn speakers are available for outdoor applications. Indoor-only speakers should not be exposed to rain or moisture.
