A background music amplifier is the main control point of a commercial audio system. It powers the speakers, manages connected music sources and, where required, allows microphones to be used for paging and announcements.
Our range includes compact amplifiers for individual rooms, 100V mixer amplifiers for distributed speaker systems, multi-zone models for larger premises and slave amplifiers for expanding an existing installation. These amplifiers are suitable for shops, restaurants, cafés, hotels, offices, schools, places of worship, warehouses, gyms and other commercial or public spaces.
A 100V line amplifier is usually the most practical choice when a system needs multiple speakers or longer cable runs. Instead of calculating a complex combined impedance, each compatible 100V speaker is set to a selected wattage using its transformer tap.
The wattage settings of all connected speakers are then added together. This combined load must remain below the amplifier’s rated 100V output, with sensible spare capacity left rather than operating the amplifier continuously at its maximum rating.
For example, eight speakers set to 10W create a total load of 80W. An amplifier with more than 80W of available 100V output should be selected.
100V amplifiers can be combined with suitable ceiling speakers, wall-mounted speakers, column speakers or horn speakers, depending on the building and the required coverage.
A mixer amplifier combines the power amplifier and audio mixer in one unit. This provides a convenient central connection point for microphones, media players and other audio sources without requiring a separate mixing desk.
The number and type of inputs vary between models. Depending on the amplifier, connections and playback options can include:
Check that the amplifier has enough inputs for both your current equipment and anything that may be added later.
Many commercial mixer amplifiers include a priority microphone input. When this input is used, the music level is automatically reduced so an announcement can be heard clearly.
This is useful in shops, schools, offices, warehouses, hospitality venues and other locations where the system is used for both music and general paging. Some models also provide a chime function that can be played before an announcement.
A compatible paging microphone may be connected when announcements need to be made regularly. Check the amplifier’s microphone connection, priority function and any zone-selection requirements before choosing a microphone.
Standard background music amplifiers should not be treated as certified emergency voice alarm equipment unless the complete system has the necessary approval for that purpose.
A single-zone amplifier sends the same audio signal to every connected speaker. This is suitable for individual rooms and premises where one source and one overall volume level are required.
Multi-zone amplifiers provide greater control over different parts of a building. Depending on the model, separate areas may have individual volume levels, independent source selection or selectable paging. This allows a restaurant, hotel, school or retail premises to operate different areas from one central system.
Some amplifiers provide several selectable speaker zones but share the same amplifier output between them. Others contain separate amplifier channels for genuinely independent zones. Check the specification carefully if different music sources or independent volume control are required.
Not every background music installation requires a 100V line system. Low-impedance stereo amplifiers can be a suitable choice for smaller rooms using a limited number of compatible speakers.
These systems can provide high-quality stereo music reproduction but require the total speaker impedance to remain within the amplifier’s specified operating range. Connecting multiple speakers changes the load presented to the amplifier, so impedance and wiring arrangements must be calculated correctly.
A 100V line output must not be connected directly to a conventional low-impedance speaker unless the speaker has a suitable transformer and is correctly configured for 100V operation.
A slave amplifier provides additional output power without duplicating all the mixing and source controls of the main amplifier. It receives a line-level signal from the existing system and powers an additional group of speakers.
This can be useful when expanding a system into another area or when the speaker load exceeds the capacity of the original amplifier. The main amplifier must have a suitable line output, and the new speaker circuit must be matched correctly to the slave amplifier.
Consider the following when selecting an amplifier:

Q: How powerful does my 100V amplifier need to be?
A: Add together the selected wattage setting of every connected 100V speaker. The total must remain below the amplifier’s rated 100V output, with spare capacity left rather than loading the amplifier to its maximum.
Q: Can I use any speakers with a 100V amplifier?
A: No. The speakers must be designed for 100V line operation or fitted with a suitable 100V transformer. Conventional low-impedance speakers should only be connected to a compatible low-impedance output.
Q: Can a background music amplifier play music through Bluetooth?
A: Many models include Bluetooth, but it is not standard on every amplifier. Check the individual product specification for Bluetooth, USB, radio, network streaming and other required playback options.
Q: Can I connect a microphone for announcements?
A: Yes, provided the amplifier has a compatible microphone input. Choose a model with microphone priority if the music needs to reduce automatically while an announcement is being made.
Q: Do I need a multi-zone amplifier?
A: A multi-zone amplifier is useful when different rooms need separate volume levels, source selection or paging control. A single-zone amplifier is normally sufficient when every speaker will play the same audio at the same level.
Q: Are speakers included with these amplifiers?
A: No, unless the product is specifically described as a system bundle. Individual amplifiers are supplied separately from the speakers, cable, microphones and installation accessories.
