Wall Mount Speakers for Background Music and PA Systems

Wall mount speakers offer a practical way to distribute music and speech throughout commercial and public spaces. Supplied with mounting brackets, they can be positioned and angled towards the main listening area to provide more controlled coverage than free-standing speakers.

Their enclosed cabinet design can deliver a fuller sound than many compact ceiling speakers, making them suitable for background music, announcements and higher-volume foreground audio.

Wall-mounted speakers are commonly installed in retail premises, cafés, restaurants, bars, offices, schools, hotels, leisure facilities and reception areas. Weather-resistant models are also available for covered terraces, outdoor hospitality spaces and other suitable external locations.

100V Wall Mount Speakers

A 100V wall speaker system is ideal when several speakers need to be installed across a large room, building or multiple audio zones. Speakers can be connected along long cable runs without the impedance calculations required by conventional low-impedance systems.

Most 100V wall speakers provide selectable power tappings. These allow the installer to control how much amplifier power each speaker receives and balance the volume between different areas.

When planning the system, add together the selected wattage of every connected speaker. The total must remain below the rated 100V output of the amplifier, with additional headroom allowed for reliable operation and possible future expansion.

Low-Impedance Wall Speakers

Low-impedance wall speakers are a good option for smaller installations using fewer speakers. They can be connected to a compatible installation or power amplifier and are often chosen where music quality and higher individual speaker output are priorities.

Many models offer both 100V and low-impedance operation, allowing the same speaker to be used in different types of installation. The correct operating mode must be selected before the speaker is connected.

When using low-impedance speakers, the combined impedance of the connected cabinets must remain within the amplifier’s specified operating range. A low-impedance speaker must not be connected directly to a 100V amplifier output.

Active Wall Mount Speakers

Selected wall mount speakers contain built-in amplification and can be used without a separate power amplifier. These models can provide a convenient solution for smaller rooms, displays or individual zones.

Power requirements and available audio inputs vary between active models. Check whether the speaker requires a mains or low-voltage supply and whether additional passive speakers can be connected.

For larger installations, a central amplifier will usually provide greater control over music sources, paging and volume zones.

Indoor Wall Speakers

Indoor wall speakers are available in different cabinet sizes and power ratings to suit anything from quiet background music to higher-output commercial audio.

Compact models are suitable for offices, treatment rooms, corridors and smaller retail spaces. Larger speakers with two-way driver arrangements provide increased output, extended low-frequency reproduction and clearer music playback for bars, restaurants, gyms and leisure venues.

Adjustable brackets allow the speakers to be aimed towards customers, staff or seated audiences. Black and white finishes are available to suit different interiors.

Weather-Resistant Outdoor Speakers

Weather-resistant wall speakers are designed for locations where moisture or changing environmental conditions may be present. Typical applications include covered seating areas, pub gardens, hotel terraces, outdoor retail areas and leisure facilities.

The level of protection varies between models, so always check the stated IP rating against the intended location. A weather-resistant speaker is not automatically suitable for every exposed outdoor environment.

Cable connections, junction boxes, mounting hardware and the amplifier location must also be protected appropriately. Correct installation is essential to maintain the environmental protection offered by the speaker enclosure.

Wall-Mounted Sound Projectors

Sound projectors offer an alternative to conventional cabinet speakers when audio needs to be directed along a corridor, walkway or defined listening area.

Their focused projection can improve speech coverage and reduce unnecessary sound in surrounding areas. They are commonly used for announcements and background audio in transport facilities, public buildings, shopping areas and commercial corridors.

Coverage patterns vary between models, so check whether the speaker projects sound in one direction or provides two-way coverage.

Choosing the Correct Speaker Size

The appropriate speaker size will depend on the room, required volume, mounting position and type of audio being reproduced.

Smaller drivers are suitable for speech and low-level background music. Larger 5.25-inch, 6.5-inch and 8-inch models generally provide stronger low-frequency reproduction and higher output for music-led environments.

Important specifications to consider include:

  • 100V or low-impedance operation
  • Available 100V power tappings
  • RMS power handling
  • Sensitivity and maximum sound pressure level
  • Frequency response
  • Horizontal and vertical coverage
  • Indoor or weather-resistant construction
  • IP rating
  • Cabinet dimensions and weight
  • Mounting-bracket adjustment
  • Whether the speakers are supplied singly or as a pair

Speaker quantity and placement are just as important as individual power. Several correctly positioned speakers operating at moderate volume will usually provide more even coverage than a smaller number of speakers playing at a higher level.

Wall Mount or Ceiling Speakers?

Wall mount speakers are a good choice when ceiling access is limited or when the speakers need to be angled towards a particular listening area. Their enclosed cabinets can also provide fuller music reproduction and make maintenance easier.

For an installation where the speakers need to remain as visually discreet as possible, ceiling speakers can provide even overhead coverage throughout the room.

Column speakers may be more suitable where controlled vertical dispersion and speech intelligibility are the priorities, while horn speakers are designed for long-distance outdoor announcements and high-noise environments.

Planning a Wall Speaker Installation

Before selecting the speakers, consider the required coverage, mounting height, available amplifier power and environmental conditions. The fixing surface must be capable of safely supporting the speaker and bracket.

Speakers should be aimed towards the intended listening area while avoiding unnecessary reflections from walls, windows and hard ceilings. In larger spaces, distributing more speakers throughout the room can improve coverage and allow the system to operate at a more comfortable volume.
