Active PA speakers, also known as powered PA speakers, combine the loudspeaker and amplifier in one cabinet. This removes the need for a separate power amplifier and provides a convenient solution for mobile DJs, bands, singers, venues, schools, houses of worship, corporate events and professional sound systems.
Our range includes compact powered speakers for speech and smaller performances, versatile 10-inch and 12-inch models, high-output 15-inch cabinets and complete column PA systems. Choose from respected professional audio brands including FBT, dB Technologies, Citronic, Studiomaster, Avante Audio and QTX.
Driver size is an important consideration when choosing an active speaker, but amplifier power, maximum sound pressure level, coverage and cabinet design should also be compared.
Compact 8-inch and 10-inch speakers are easy to transport and work well for presentations, acoustic performers, vocal reinforcement and smaller venues. A 12-inch active speaker provides a useful balance between low-frequency performance, output and portability, making it a popular choice for mobile DJs, bands and general event use.
A 15-inch active PA speaker generally delivers a fuller low-frequency response and is well suited to recorded music, larger rooms and applications requiring greater impact. For more powerful and controlled bass, combine your main speakers with one or more active subwoofers.
Many modern active speakers include digital signal processing with selectable presets for music, speech, DJ and monitor applications. Depending on the model, additional controls may include equalisation, high-pass filters, limiters and digital delay.
Speakers with built-in mixers can accept microphones, instruments and playback equipment directly, while Bluetooth-equipped models provide convenient wireless music streaming from compatible phones, tablets and laptops. These features vary between products, so check the individual specification if a particular connection or control function is required.
XLR link or mix outputs allow compatible powered speakers to be connected together. This makes it straightforward to build a two-speaker system or send audio to an additional speaker or subwoofer.
Many active PA cabinets have an angled enclosure that allows them to operate vertically as front-of-house speakers or horizontally as powered stage monitors. Models intended specifically for monitoring can be found in our active floor monitors range.
Pole-mount sockets are common, while selected professional models also include mounting or suspension points for permanent venue installations. Browse our speaker accessories for compatible stands, poles, brackets and protective covers.
A pair of active speakers provides wider coverage and allows stereo operation when connected to a suitable mixer. Adding active subwoofers creates a fuller system for live bands, DJs and larger events by allowing the main speakers to concentrate on midrange and high-frequency reproduction.
If you need speakers, subwoofers, stands or other equipment supplied together, our PA system bundles offer complete packages built around compatible components.
For self-contained battery-powered systems that are easier to use away from mains power, explore our portable PA speakers.
Q: What is the difference between active and passive PA speakers?
A: An active PA speaker has a built-in amplifier and connects directly to a mixer or compatible audio source. A passive speaker requires a separate external power amplifier.
Q: Do I need a mixer with active PA speakers?
A: Not always. Some models include microphone, line, instrument and Bluetooth inputs. A separate mixer is recommended when using several microphones or audio sources, or when more detailed control is required.
Q: Should I choose a 10-inch, 12-inch or 15-inch speaker?
A: Compact 10-inch models are convenient for speech and smaller events, 12-inch speakers offer a versatile balance of output and portability, and 15-inch models generally provide stronger low-frequency performance.
Q: Do I need one or two active speakers?
A: One speaker may be sufficient for speech, monitoring or smaller applications. Two speakers provide wider audience coverage and allow stereo playback.
Q: Should I add an active subwoofer?
A: A subwoofer is recommended for DJs, dance music, live bands and larger events where deeper and more powerful bass is required.
Q: Do all active PA speakers have Bluetooth?
A: No. Bluetooth is included on selected models only. Check the individual product specification if wireless streaming is essential.
Q: Can active PA speakers be used outdoors?
A: They can be used outdoors in suitable dry conditions, but most standard PA speakers are not weatherproof. Only use a speaker in rain or exposed locations when it has the appropriate weather-resistance rating.
